HYDERABAD

Telangana BJP MLA T Raja Singh was arrested by the police on Tuesday for making alleged derogatory remarks against Prophet Muhammad.

A case was lodged against the BJP MLA following protests that broke out on Monday night in Hyderabad after BJP MLA Raja Singh released a video about the Prophet.

The protests took place in front of city police commissioner CV Anand’s office and other parts of town.

The protesters said Singh hurt the community’s sentiments and demanded his immediate arrest. Police took the protesters into custody at the commissioner’s office in Basheer Bagh and shifted them to several police stations.

WHAT DID HE SAY?

The BJP MLA had released a “comedy” video against comedian Munawar Faruqui who held a show in Hyderabad last week amid protests. Earlier, Raja Singh threatened to stop Faruqui’s show and said he would burn down the set at the venue. He was placed under house arrest for the threat.

Raja Singh said Munavar Faruqui hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus and made remarks against the comedian and his mother. He also allegedly made derogatory remarks about the Prophet in the video.

The incident comes just months after an international row erupted over former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma’s remark on the Prophet. The BJP suspended Nupur Sharma and as many as 10 cases were filed against her across the country.
