Rohingya camp volunteer rescued hours after abduction

A Cyclone Preparedness Program (CPP) volunteer has been rescued hours after being abducted from a Rohingya camp in Cox’s Bazar.

Members of Armed Police Battalion (APBn) rescued the volunteer from a hilly area inside the number 16 Shafiullah Kata Rohingya Camp in Ukhiya upazila early Thursday.

The volunteer, Md Hosain, a resident of Ukhiya upazila, was working at the camp when he was abducted on Wednesday evening by a group of Rohingya miscreants.

The APBn arrested Md Taher, 32, head boatman of the camp, in this connection.Cox’s Bazar 16 APBn Commander SP Md Hemayetul Islam confirmed the matter.

He said when other members of the CPP informed the APBn, they conducted a drive in the area to rescue the volunteer. At 12:30am, they located Md Hosain but the kidnappers managed to escape.

Later on Thursday, Taher was arrested on charges of being involved with the abduction.

Police are yet to disclose the reason behind the abduction of the CPP volunteer.
