Sri Lanka plans to ease import restrictions on imported goods, except vehicles, in October. The move is expected to help stabilize prices, as there is not enough supply to meet demand.

The Sri Lankan government initially restricted 1,465 items in August 2022 due to the economic crisis, but lifted most restrictions on multiple occasions.

Official data shows that Sri Lanka’s total import expenditure in 2022 was over 18 billion U.S. dollars, a 11.4 percent decrease from 2021.
