Auckland police are investigating a shooting in the suburb of Onehunga that has left a person critically injured. Authorities believe the incident was a targeted attack and are urging anyone with information or security camera footage from Arthur Street to come forward.
The victim was transported by St John to Auckland Hospital, where they remain in critical condition. Police confirmed they received reports shortly after 11 a.m. that someone had sustained injuries consistent with a gunshot wound at a residential property.
Residents in the area have reported a heightened police presence as officers continue their investigation, but authorities have reassured the public there is no ongoing risk.
A woman living near a local dairy, whose owners were reportedly preparing to travel to Dubai for their son’s wedding, described the family as “lovely” and noted they had been running the shop for a long time. Speaking anonymously, she said she returned home from work to find police on the street.
“My daughter was home alone, and I came home from work and drove my car into the garage, and I saw a policeman with a big gun on the corner,” she said. “I was worried, obviously, for my daughter; she didn’t hear it. It’s a really sad thing.”
Another resident, living opposite the cordoned property, said her granddaughter heard a loud crashing noise at the time of the incident, adding to the shock in the neighborhood.
Police have indicated that an increased presence in the area will continue while the investigation progresses. Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the shooting or captured footage on nearby cameras to contact them immediately.
No further details about the identity of the victim or suspects have been released as the investigation remains ongoing.
This incident has left the Onehunga community shaken, highlighting the risks of targeted violence and the importance of timely information to support police investigations.
