Habeler, who has entered his ninth decade of life, has continued to climb mountains. He prefers to call mountains and hills friends. Whether it is the Alps mountain range of his native land or the mountains of other continents melting due to rising temperatures, he is concerned.

Habeler, an activist for sustainable tourism, started working as a mountain guide. His son is still running the ski school he founded in his native Meerhofen. He wanted to show that nothing is impossible if he tries with determination, perseverance and hard work and to open doors of opportunity for others.

At the age of seventy-four, Haebler also set the record for the oldest mountaineer by successfully climbing the northern Mohda of the Eiger mountain in Switzerland. He climbed the mountain with his predecessor, David Lama. The lama was only 26 years old at that time.

A llama died in an avalanche in Canada’s Banff National Park. Saddened by the death of Lama, Hebler’s eyes are still filled with tears. Arohi Lama lost his life in an accident which made him more aware. However, he continued to climb the mountain.
