Pakistan Former Prime Minister Imran Khan arrested. Imran Khan has been convicted by the District-Sessions Court in the Toshakhana case. He has been sentenced to three years in this case. Islamabad police have arrested Imran as soon as he is punished. At the same time, his party PTI has spoken of going to the High Court against this decision.
The law of Pakistan, any gift received from the dignitaries of a foreign state has to be kept in the State Depository ie Toshakhana. If the head of state wants to retain the gift, he will have to pay an amount equal to its value. This is decided through an auction process. These gifts either remain deposited in the Toshakhana or can be auctioned and the money earned through this is deposited in the national exchequer.
When Imran was the prime minister. Imran Khan, who came to power in 2018, received 58 gifts worth about Rs 14 crore during official visits. These costly gifts were deposited in the Toshakhana. Later Imran Khan bought them from Toshakhana at a cheap price and then sold them in the market at an expensive price. He also made changes in the government law during this whole process.
According to media reports, Imran bought these gifts from Toshakhana for Rs 2.15 crore and earned a profit of Rs 5.8 crore by selling them. The gifts included a Graph watch, a pair of cufflinks, an expensive pen, a ring and four Rolex watches.
According to Pakistani media reports, a few months after Imran Khan was ousted from power in August, some lawmakers from the ruling coalition filed a charge sheet before National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervez Ashraf. Imran Khan was accused of not handing over the details of the gifts he received to Toshakhana. Money has been earned by selling them. The speaker of Pakistan got an inquiry done in this matter. On September 8, Imran Khan received the notice. He replied to this notice and said that he had sold four gifts he had received when he was the Prime Minister. These gifts included Graff, a Rolex watch, a pair of cufflinks, an expensive pen, several metal articles and a ring.
Imran Khan’s parliament membership was also lost last year when the allegations were proven. According to media reports, Imran Khan had deliberately violated the provisions of the Election Act, of 2017 and made false statements. He had also given wrong information about his assets for the year 2020-21.
Imran Khan was disqualified under Article 63(1)(p) of the Constitution, along with sections of the Election Act. Article 63(1)(p) of the Constitution of Pakistan states that a person disqualified for the time being under any law to be elected or to be elected as a member of the Majlis-e-Shura or a Provincial Assembly May go.
According to reports, after the Toshakhana case came to light, Imran Khan also stated it. He had said that he had received these gifts personally. So they have the right to keep it with them. However, he later termed all the allegations in the Toshakhana case as baseless.
After being sentenced, he was arrested. Along with this, Imran has been banned from contesting elections for five years. At the same time, his party PTI has announced that the party will challenge the district court’s decision in the High Court. In a statement, the party rejected the court’s decision and said that there is another black spot in the judicial system.
