Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe has proposed for the 13th Amendment to reconcile the country’s minority Tamil community. He has invited all Lankan parties to submit proposals on 13A, which allows for the transfer of power to the minority Tamil community.
The amendment was introduced after the Indo-Sri Lanka Accord of 1987 and created nine provinces as transferred units. Wickremesinghe emphasized that no political party opposes 13A and called for a final decision on its implementation.
He also urged all parties to study the transfer of power through 13A and present their proposals for Parliament to make the system more meaningful. Wickremesinghe also emphasized the importance of improving air and sea connectivity in the northern region, stating that the government plans to enhance Kankesanthurai Harbour, Vavuniya, and Palali airports in northern Sri Lanka and establish a ferry service between the northern province and southern India.
