Many foreign nationals, including the United States, are held in prisons in Afghanistan. This information was given in a local media report on Monday citing a Taliban official.

Without disclosing the exact number of foreigners imprisoned in Afghanistan, Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban regime’s chief spokesman, said, “They are being held in connection with security and other issues such as violations of our laws,” Xinhua news agency cited TOLO News as saying. has been taken into custody.”

Tolo News quoted Mujahid as saying that those detained would be released if proven innocent and that a solution would be found for those who are not innocent.

Neither Mujahid nor TOLO News provided further details.

The disclosure comes a week after the US and the Taliban held talks in Doha for the first time since the fall of Kabul in August 2021.

During the July 30–31 talks in the Qatari capital, Washington pressed the regime to “reverse policies responsible for the deteriorating human rights situation” in Afghanistan, as well as release detained American citizens.

On their part, the Taliban said they wanted to freeze assets in Afghanistan, as well as lift sanctions and travel restrictions.
