Azerbaijan has regained the Nagorno-Karabakh region after a 24-hour assault, forcing ethnic Armenian forces to surrender and agreeing to a Russia-brokered ceasefire. Azerbaijan will halt its military offensive, which killed at least 200 people and injured many more, and hold talks with Karabakh officials to discuss reintegration. The first round of talks took place on Thursday, with Karabakh representatives meeting a delegation from Azerbaijan.
Russia’s peacekeeping force has begun to evacuate civilians from Nagorno-Karabakh, but concerns remain that Azerbaijan’s reclaiming could create tens of thousands of refugees and Armenia’s government has warned of ethnic cleansing risks.
