British-supplied Challenger 2 tanks have reportedly taken center stage in a surprise Ukrainian counteroffensive targeting Russia’s Kursk region. Pro-Russian sources claim Ukrainian forces launched a meticulously coordinated assault on January 5, propelling both sides into a fierce engagement.
The Ukrainian offensive began in the early hours of January 5, with reports of tanks and infantry advancing towards Bolshoye Soldatskoye, a village strategically located 15 miles northeast of the Sudzha stronghold. Pro-Russian military bloggers were quick to highlight the gravity of the situation, with Telegram channel “Archangel of Spetsnaz Z” providing frequent updates to its 1.1 million followers.
“The enemy is driving forward with tanks and armored personnel carriers full of soldiers,” the channel declared, underscoring the intensity of the assault.
Russian officials, including Deputy Defense Minister Yunus-Bek Yevkurov, swiftly responded, arriving in Kursk Oblast to oversee defensive measures. Despite the rapid deployment of top military officials, Ukrainian forces continued to press their advantage, signaling a calculated attempt to disrupt Russian control and potentially strengthen Kyiv’s hand in future peace negotiations.
At the heart of this offensive were the Challenger 2 tanks, a formidable component of Ukraine’s armored capabilities. These tanks, supplied by the United Kingdom in early 2023, have been instrumental in past operations, notably during the August 2024 offensive that resulted in significant territorial gains in the Kursk region.
Rybar, a prominent Russian military blogger, confirmed the involvement of these tanks, stating that at least one Challenger 2 was destroyed by Russian drone strikes. “It was destroyed by drone crews from the 155th Guards Marine Brigade of the Pacific Fleet,” Rybar reported, sharing purported footage of the drone strike. The video depicted grainy footage of a tank, reportedly a Challenger 2, being targeted in a concealed tree line.
The Challenger 2 tanks have garnered praise from Ukrainian forces for their advanced features, particularly their rifled 120mm gun and sophisticated fire control systems. These capabilities allow precise targeting even in adverse conditions, with Ukrainian soldiers citing their effectiveness at distances up to 10 kilometers.
One Ukrainian crew member in November 2024 extolled the tank’s performance, emphasizing its ability to adjust for environmental factors like wind speed and humidity, thus ensuring accuracy in long-range engagements.

The ‘ping’ delay is considerable. All drones, except those using fiber optics, have crashed. As a result, spotting targets has reverted to outdated methods, like using binoculars,” the blogger noted.
The UMPKs, aerial munitions requiring precise and stable control, have been rendered almost useless due to the electronic disruption. This has left Russian forces struggling to adapt, further complicating their defensive operations.
Razvedos Advanced Gear & Equipment, a well-regarded Russian military news channel, corroborated these accounts, emphasizing the effectiveness of Ukraine’s EW in the ongoing offensive. “While this direction wasn’t unexpected, their electronic warfare implementation proved EXTREMELY effective,” the channel remarked.
While some Russian sources have attempted to downplay the effectiveness of Ukraine’s electronic warfare, the disruption caused by these systems has been evident. The offensive in Kursk, coming during the harsh winter months, highlights Ukraine’s strategic intent to capitalize on any weaknesses in Russian defenses and to assert control over contested territories.
Ukrainian officials have remained cautious in their public statements regarding the offensive, with Andriy Yermak, Ukraine’s chief of staff, cryptically noting that Russia was “getting what it deserves” in Kursk. This limited disclosure reflects a deliberate strategy to control the narrative and possibly preserve operational security.
