China mulls ways to boost birth rates

China’s continuous decline in population, political advisors have made 20 suggestions to increase the birth rate. But experts have said that stopping the rate of population decline is the best solution for the time being.

Chinese youth say that they are not willing to have more than one child due to the high cost of upbringing and education, low income, weak social security and gender inequality.

In the recently concluded Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), suggestions were presented including that the first child should be given preferential treatment over the second and third, public education should be free, and support should be given to the treatment of the childless.

Due to the one-child policy adopted from 1980 to 2015, China has a big demographic problem. After 2021, China revised this system and allowed up to three children. But during the Covid-19 epidemic, even couples who stayed at home were reluctant to have children.
