Hussain Shaheed Suhrawardy

Suhrawardy, a Bengali politician from East Pakistan, was the fifth Prime Minister of the country. He was arrested in January 1962 on charges of ‘anti-national activities’. But experts say that Suhrawardy’s real crime was that he refused to support the military ruler General Ayub Khan.

Zulfikar Ali Bhutto

Bhutto, the ninth Prime Minister of Pakistan, was arrested in 1974 on charges of plotting the assassination of one of his political opponents. He was sentenced to death and hanged on April 4, 1979.

Benazir Bhutto

Benazir Bhutto, the only female Prime Minister of Pakistan, was also arrested several times. She was the Prime Minister of the country twice. First time from 1988 to 1990 and second time from 1993 to 1996.

Benazir was arrested for the first time in 1985. Then he was kept under house arrest for 90 days. After this, he was arrested in August 1986 on the charge of threatening the military ruler General Zia-ul-Haq in a rally in Karachi.

In April 1999, he was sentenced to five years in prison in a case of corruption. Then he was fined 50 million pounds. However, Benazir managed to avoid arrest because she was living outside Pakistan at that time.

Nawaz Sharif

When General Pervez Musharraf took over the reins of Pakistan in 1999, he arrested Nawaz Sharif. After this, Nawaz Sharif remained in exile for ten years.

In July 2018, Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz were sentenced to ten years in prison in a corruption case. In December of the same year, Nawaz Sharif was sentenced to seven years in prison in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills corruption case. In 2019, he went to London for treatment and never returned.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi

Abbasi was arrested in July 2019. He was accused of being involved in the liquefied natural gas corruption case. However, Abbasi got bail later.

Imran Khan

Imran Khan was also arrested in another corruption case on May 9, 2023. But after the intervention of the Supreme Court, he was released within a few days. On August 5, 2023, he was sentenced to three years in prison in the Toshakhana corruption case. eme Court also said to Rahul Gandhi that a person in public life is expected to take precautions during his public speeches.

The Supreme Court also said that the implementation of Section 8(3) of the Representation of the People Act affects not only the rights of the petitioner but also the rights of the voters of his constituency. Therefore keeping in mind that the trial court has not given any reason for the maximum sentence, the sentence of Rahul Gandhi is being stayed.
