India, Tanzania agree on roadmap for new areas of cooperation

India and Tanzania have agreed on a roadmap to further boost their time-tested ties by identifying new areas of cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, agriculture, defence and education.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met Tanzanian Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Stergomena Takse, at the 10th India-Tanzania Joint Commission Meeting here. “This allowed us to take stock of our relationship and discuss new areas on which we need to move forward. Also, it was agreed upon how to deepen our cooperation in areas on which we have been working for many years.

Areas that the two sides focused on included their economic cooperation and how to enhance trade and investment. Both sides also discussed how to promote stronger cooperation in ICT (Information and Communication Technology) and technology.

“We talked about expanding training and exchanges within ourselves. And we saw sectors like health, agriculture, defense and education as new domains between India and Tanzania,” he told reporters.

Jaishankar said that India is proud of the water partnership between the two countries. “The water partnership includes a soft loan of about one billion dollars, which upon completion of the projects will bring safe drinking water to 8 million Tanzanians. I think it will cover 28 cities of this country,” he said.

Tax said both sides expressed satisfaction at the milestones in various fields, including politics, trade and investment, energy, education, water, health, ICT and defence, and agreed to strengthen cooperation in these areas.-

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar reached Ahmedabad on Sunday to file his nomination papers for the July 10 Rajya Sabha elections from Gujarat, a BJP functionary said. Jaishankar’s term ends on August 18.
