Indian Naval Ships (INS) – INS Sahyadri (Frigate Class) and INS Kolkata (Destroyer Class) are on a goodwill visit to Papua New Guinea and will be docked at Port Moresby. From August 2-4, the Indian High Commission in Port Moresby said in a statement. Members of the Indian community in Papua New Guinea can visit the ship on 3 August.
The Indian High Commission in Port Moresby tweeted, “Indian Naval Ships (INS) Sahyadri (Frigate Class) and INS Kolkata (Destroyer Class) at Port Moresby to embark for Indian expatriates tomorrow (August 3, 2023) at 10 am.” Will be open. From morning till 2 pm. Don’t miss the chance to be a part of this historical journey!”
In another tweet, the Indian High Commission in Port Moresby said, “Building a bridge between India and PNG Defense Forces! INS Sahyadri and INS Kolkata at Port Moresby from Aug 2-4, 2023. Seeing the enthusiastic welcome of Indian expatriates to our Navy.” Very pleased.” INS Sahyadri has reached Papua New Guinea after her last voyage in June 2017. High Commission of India in Port Moresby tweeted, “Capt Rajan Kapoor (INS Sahyadri), Capt Sharad Sinsunwal (INS Kolkata) DCDF Commander Philip Polewara Defense Attaché Capt. Menon and discussed bilateral defence cooperation. He met HC Inbasekar S, who was also joined by the Indian community and the PNG media during the ship’s visit to Port Moresby.
Notably, INS Sahyadri under the command of Captain Anil Jaggi with over 200 crew members made a goodwill visit to Port Moresby from 12-15 June 2017, according to a statement released on the High Commission of India in Port Moresby’s website. India and Papua New Guinea enjoy warm and friendly relations. The two countries have formalized diplomatic relations since 19 May 1976. India opened its High Commission in Port Moresby in April 1996.
In May this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Papua New Guinea (PNG) on Sunday. During his visit, PM Modi chaired the 3rd Summit of the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) Summit. During his visit, PM Modi and his Papua New Guinean counterpart James Marape held a bilateral meeting in Port Moresby and discussed cooperation in commerce, technology and healthcare as well as addressing climate change. He also held talks with the Governor-General of Papua New Guinea, Bob Dade.
