Iranian delegation addresses Taliban water rights issue in Afghanistan

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani announced that an Iranian delegation is visiting Kabul to discuss water rights with Taliban representatives. The 11-member delegation from Tehran has visited Afghanistan to address the issue, as tensions have risen between Afghanistan and Iran over water rights to the Helmand River.

Tehran accuses the Taliban of failing to preserve water rights as per a 1973 water agreement between Kabul and Tehran. The Taliban has been repeatedly warned by Iran to respect Iran’s water rights. As a result, the Taliban sent armed forces to the borders of the two countries, highlighting the ongoing tensions between the two nations.
