The Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) has condemned derogatory remarks made by officials in the tourism-dependent country against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the people of India. MATI praised India as a close neighbor and ally of the Maldives, citing its history of being a first responder to crises.
It stressed that India has been a consistent and significant contributor to the Maldives’ tourism industry and has greatly assisted the Maldives recovery efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic. MATI stated that India has continued to remain one of the top markets for the Maldives and wished for the close relationship between the two nations to endure for generations to come. The row was triggered after the Maldives deputy minister and other cabinet members made disparaging references to PM Modi’s Lakshadweep visit.
PM Modi visited the Union Territory of Lakshadweep on January 2 and shared pictures of white beaches, pristine blue skies, and the ocean. He tagged them with the message “For those who wish to embrace the adventurer in them, Lakshadweep has to be on your list.” The Maldivian Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment, Mariyam Shiuna, made a mocking and disrespectful reference to PM Modi in a deleted post. Indians, including cricketers and film celebrities, have expressed support for promoting local beach destinations and tourist spots.
However, the Maldives government distanced itself from the remarks made by its ministers, stating that the remarks against foreign leaders are “unacceptable” and do not reflect the official position of the Maldives government. The Maldives government remains committed to fostering positive and constructive dialogue with all partners, especially neighbors, based on mutual respect and understanding.
Indian High Commissioner to Maldives, Munu Mahawar, held a meeting with Ambassador at Large Ali Naseer Mohamed at the Maldivian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Male. The meeting aimed to discuss bilateral issues. Meanwhile, former Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih condemned the use of hateful language against India by Maldivian government officials on social media, stating that India has always been a good friend to Maldives and should not let such remarks negatively impact the age-old friendship between the two countries.
