The Supreme Court is going to hear the petition of two women from Manipur, who were seen in a video parading nude. A bench of CJI DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra will hear the petitions related to the Manipur violence. During this, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said that the government has no objection if the Supreme Court monitors the investigation. Mehta said that he never requested to transfer the trial of the two women to Assam in the case of stripping.

Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal appeared for both women. He said a petition has been filed on his behalf. The apex court had said on July 20 that it was deeply saddened by the incident in violence-hit Manipur. Using women as tools in violence is completely unacceptable in a democracy. A bench headed by the CJI, after taking cognizance of the video, directed the Center and the Manipur government to take immediate remedial, rehabilitative and preventive steps and apprise it of the action taken.

During the hearing today, the court asked Manipur to develop a comprehensive mechanism to deal with violence against women. The CJI today asked how many cases of violence against women have been registered in Manipur since May. After this video surfaced of the May 4 incident in Manipur, tension had arisen in the state. So far more than 160 people have died in the ethnic violence that broke out in Manipur.
