Morocco Earthquake: Death toll crosses 2000, earth trembling

CCTV footage of a 6.8-magnitude earthquake in Morocco has gone viral on social media, capturing the aftermath of the disaster. The earthquake occurred in Marrakesh, a popular tourist destination, and resulted in thousands of deaths and injuries.

The footage shows people running and dust, indicating a collapsed building. Rescue operations are ongoing, and people buried under debris are being searched for. At least 2012 people were declared dead, while 2059 were injured. The Home Ministry released figures showing 1404 people in critical condition.

The earthquake’s epicentre was Al-Hawz province, with 1,293 deaths, and the two most affected areas were Taroudant and Al-Hawz province, with 452 deaths.

This was the strongest earthquake ever to hit the North African region and the strongest earthquake in over 120 years. Survivor Ayoub Todite described the shock of seeing people dying, running away, and children crying. The area saw 20 deaths and 30 injuries.
