Pakistan’s Karachi has become the least livable city in the world. It is ranked 169 out of 173 cities worldwide. Only cities like Lagos, Algiers, Tripoli and Damascus are below Karachi. The London-based Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) released the Global Liveability Index in 2023.
Post-Covid recovery measures living conditions taking into account stability, health care, culture, environment, education and infrastructure based on efforts to restore normalcy.
The index measures the lifestyle challenges faced by an individual in 173 cities around the world. Assigns a 1-100 rating to assess livability. Here a score of 1 is considered intolerable and a rating of 100 is ideal.
However, Karachi got only 42.5 points on these five factors. It scored 20 on the sustainability index, 50 in healthcare, 38.7 in culture and environment, 75 in education and 51.8 in infrastructure.
This is less than ideal, placing it fifth among the least livable cities. However, since 2019, Karachi has not fared much better in the Global Liveability Index. In 2019 it was ranked 136 out of 140 cities and in 2022 it will be at 140th position. The list is not released in 2020.
