Private Jet Overturns on Takeoff in Northeastern US State, Eight Passengers on Board

plane crash

A private jet carrying eight people crashed late Sunday evening at Bangor International Airport, authorities confirmed. The incident occurred around 7:45 p.m. local time as the aircraft was attempting to take off.

The plane, a Bombardier Challenger 600, overturned on the runway, prompting the immediate closure of the airport. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have both confirmed that they are launching investigations into the crash.

In a statement on social media platform X, the FAA said, “A Bombardier Challenger 600 crashed as it was taking off from Bangor International Airport in Maine around 7:45 p.m. local time on Sunday, Jan. 25. Eight people were on board. The FAA and NTSB will investigate.”

Bangor International Airport earlier urged the public to avoid the area, noting that the runway remained closed and that emergency responders were on site. “The incident is under investigation, and first responders are on the scene,” the airport added in a social media post.

Details about the condition of the passengers remain unclear. Local media reported that authorities have not yet released information regarding injuries or fatalities.

CNN cited air traffic control communications, reporting that a pilot was cleared for takeoff on Runway 33 before all traffic was abruptly halted. Controllers reported that a passenger aircraft had overturned, triggering the rapid deployment of emergency services.

The jet is registered to a Houston-based company, according to flight records. Officials have not yet confirmed the identities of those onboard.

This marks a rare but serious aviation incident in Maine, where Bangor International Airport primarily handles commercial and private flights for the region. The investigation by the FAA and NTSB will focus on determining the cause of the crash, including potential mechanical issues, weather conditions, and pilot actions.

Authorities continue to secure the site, and the airport remains closed as teams work to remove the aircraft and ensure the safety of airport personnel and passengers. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
