The Russian aerobatic team Strizhi (Swifts), renowned for its spectacular aerial performances, has received a significantly upgraded variant of the MiG-29 Fulcrum — the MiG-29SMT. This development marks a pivotal moment in the history of the elite squad, which has long relied on older MiG-29 models for its operations.

On December 5, 2024, the Strizhi officially announced the acquisition, stating:

“After theoretical and practical retraining, we overtook the first batch of MiG-29SMT. This is a deep modernization of the MiG-29.”

While the statement did not reveal an exact schedule for these aircraft’s induction into regular service, it confirmed that the new jets would soon feature the distinctive Strizhi livery, symbolizing their readiness for aerial performances.

The Strizhi aerobatic team was founded on May 6, 1991, to showcase the capabilities of Russian aviation and inspire audiences with precise, high-energy maneuvers. Based at the Kubinka Airbase near Moscow, the group is part of the Aviation Equipment Demonstration Center named after Ivan Kozhedub, a legendary Soviet WWII ace.

Historically, the Strizhi has performed using the MiG-29 and MiG-29UB fighters. While these jets were state-of-the-art in their time, they have become outdated compared to modern military aviation standards.

MiG-29SMT

The MiG-29SMT is a deep modernization of the original MiG-29, tailored to meet contemporary combat and performance requirements. The decision to upgrade to this advanced variant is seen as a stepping stone toward the Strizhi’s ultimate goal of acquiring the MiG-35, a more advanced but controversial fighter that has struggled to secure widespread adoption.

  • Mixed Reception: The aircraft has struggled to find foreign buyers, overshadowed by competitors like the Dassault Rafale, Eurofighter Typhoon, and F-16.
  • Operational Status: While the Russian Aerospace Forces received the first MiG-35 units in 2019, its deployment has been limited. Reports suggest it was used during the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
