A Russian fighter jet crashed on country’s Pacific coast on Tuesday during a training mission and lives of its two crew members were not immediately known.
The Russian military said the MiG-31 crashed in Avacha Bay on the southeast coast of Kamchatka Peninsula. It said rescue teams were searching for its two crew members.
The army said there were no weapons on board. It did not immediately provide any further details or say what may have caused the crash.
The MiG-31 is a twin-engine, two-seat supersonic fighter aircraft designed to intercept enemy aircraft and cruise missiles at long ranges. It has been in service with the Soviet and Russian Air Forces since the 1980s.
Another MiG-31 crashed in the Murmansk region of the Arctic in April and its crew ejected safely.
The Russian Air Force has suffered some accidents, which some observers have attributed to a high number of sorties amid fighting in Ukraine and tensions with the West.
