Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani has said Saudi Arabia will soon reopen its embassy in Iran’s capital Tehran. Press conference in Tehran on Monday, however, Kanani did not say when the Saudi embassy would be opened.
He said Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi would visit Saudi Arabia on a date he has not yet decided to boost bilateral ties, Xinhua news agency reported. In early June, Iran reopened its embassy in Riyadh as well as its consulate and representative office of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Jeddah.
The embassy building, which was damaged during the 2016 protests, is in poor condition, delaying the reopening of the Saudi embassy in Tehran. Saudi Arabia is preparing the ground for the reopening of its embassy, the Iranian student news agency reported on Sunday, adding that equipment needed for the embassy’s normal operation will soon be transferred to the Tehran hotel where the mission’s staff are working.
Iran and Saudi Arabia announced in April the resumption of diplomatic ties with immediate effect, seven years after Riyadh severed ties with Tehran in 2016 in response to attacks on Saudi diplomatic missions in Iran.
