The governments of Singapore and Australia have unveiled a significant expansion of the Shoalwater Bay Training Area, a sprawling military training site in Queensland. Spanning an area approximately five times the size of Singapore, the upgraded facilities reflect a deepening defense collaboration under the Australia-Singapore Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP).
The inauguration ceremony marked the completion of construction on new and enhanced facilities designed to bolster the military capabilities of both nations. The project stands as a testament to the mutual trust and shared vision between Singapore and Australia, initiated under the CSP in 2016.
Speaking at the event, Singapore’s Senior Minister of State for Defence, Heng Chee How, emphasized the significance of the collaboration.
“These facilities enable the conduct of realistic and rigorous training to enhance the warfighting capabilities of the Singapore Armed Forces, preparing them for future conflicts,” Heng said. “Both armed forces will benefit from these facilities for years to come.”
Also in attendance was Australia’s Secretary of Defence, Greg Moriarty, who echoed Heng’s sentiments, underscoring the importance of the partnership.
The expanded training area is a critical asset for the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) and the Australian Defence Force (ADF), providing advanced training environments that can accommodate evolving military needs.
Enhancements to Shoalwater Bay Training Area
The upgrades to Shoalwater Bay include:
- Two live-fire facilities, the first of their kind in Australia.
- An integrated air-land range, allowing for synchronized operations.
- Accommodation facilities for up to 2,000 personnel.
- Medical, administrative, and logistical support buildings, ensuring comprehensive operational readiness.
- These enhancements enable up to 6,600 Singaporean military personnel to train annually for up to nine weeks, a significant increase from the previous 45-day limit.
- The upgraded infrastructure is tailored to support simultaneous unilateral training by the SAF and ADF while facilitating joint exercises.
The development of the Shoalwater Bay Training Area is part of the Australia-Singapore Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which was formalized in 2016 to deepen bilateral ties across trade, investment, and defense.

Currently, both militaries are engaged in Exercise Trident 2024, a bilateral exercise that tests joint operational capabilities. The exercise involves transitioning forces from sea to land, maneuvering in challenging terrains, and executing precision targeting operations.
