Singapore Navy Successfully Launches Aster Missile from Formidable-Class Frigate in French Waters, Demonstrating Strategic Firepower and Operational Readiness

Singapore Navy Successfully Launches Aster Missile from Formidable-Class Frigate in French Waters

In a striking show of maritime combat readiness, the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) has successfully conducted a live-fire test of an Aster surface-to-air missile from its stealth frigate, RSS Formidable. The test was executed in the strategic waters off Toulon, France, and marks a pivotal step in Singapore’s ongoing efforts to maintain cutting-edge naval capabilities amid rising regional tensions.

Although the precise timing of the launch remains undisclosed, the RSN confirmed through an official Facebook post that the missile intercepted and destroyed a hostile drone target. This successful interception validates the operational performance of Singapore’s naval air defence systems under real-world conditions.

“This was an important opportunity for the RSN to hone our high-end warfighting capabilities, and validate the readiness of our systems,” the statement read.

The live-fire exercise was closely observed by senior RSN leadership, including Chief of Navy Rear-Admiral Sean Wat and Fleet Commander Rear-Admiral Kwan Hon Chuong. Their presence underlined the institutional and strategic importance of the test.

The RSN also acknowledged its partners, stating, “We thank our partners from the Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA), as well as our French counterparts from the Marine Nationale, Défense Méditerranée – Cecmed, and the Direction Générale de l’Armement for their close collaboration in making the firing a success.”

The Aster missile family, developed by European defence giant MBDA, forms a critical layer in Singapore’s naval air defence network. The Aster 15 variant is tailored for medium-range engagements, while the longer-range Aster 30 extends coverage to beyond 120 kilometres.

With a reach of 30 kilometres, the Aster 15 is specifically designed to counter a range of fast-moving aerial threats, including fighter jets, cruise missiles, and low-flying unmanned aerial systems. These capabilities are essential for securing congested and littoral sea lanes—operational environments that Singapore’s navy must routinely contend with.

The Aster 30, depending on the deployment platform, can intercept targets up to 150 kilometres away. It is equipped to deal with supersonic aircraft, ballistic missiles, and high-density saturation attacks, making it a formidable tool in the RSN’s warfighting arsenal.

Both missile types are launched from the SYLVER A50 vertical launch system, a modular, combat-tested platform known for its rapid-fire capability and 360-degree engagement envelope. When paired with multi-function radar like the Thales Herakles, the SYLVER system delivers high precision and fast response times—critical factors in modern naval combat.

The RSS Formidable is one of six Formidable-class stealth frigates that form the spearhead of the RSN’s surface fleet. Commissioned between 2008 and 2009, the class was developed in partnership with France’s Naval Group and is based on the La Fayette-class frigate design. The lead ship was built in France, while the remaining five were constructed domestically under a technology transfer programme that significantly boosted Singapore’s shipbuilding capabilities.

The fleet comprises RSS Formidable, RSS Intrepid, RSS Steadfast, RSS Tenacious, RSS Stalwart, and RSS Supreme. Together, they form a critical force projection tool, capable of operating far beyond Singapore’s immediate waters and playing vital roles in coalition maritime operations.

Designed for stealth and survivability, the Formidable-class features a low radar cross-section, minimal infrared and acoustic signatures, and reduced electromagnetic emissions. These attributes are particularly valuable in the surveillance-heavy Indo-Pacific region.

Each frigate measures 114.8 metres in length and displaces around 3,200 tonnes. Optimized for high-tempo blue-water missions, the ships are equipped with modular combat systems that enable rapid upgrades and mission-specific configurations.

The Thales TACTICOS Combat Management System serves as the combat nerve center, integrating seamlessly with the Herakles 3D radar, electronic support and countermeasure suites, and bow-mounted sonar for anti-submarine warfare.

Offensively, the frigates are equipped with a comprehensive suite of weapons:

  • 32-cell SYLVER A50 VLS for Aster 15/30 missiles
  • 8 × Harpoon Block II anti-ship missiles (soon to be replaced by the Blue Spear system)
  • 1 × 76mm OTO Melara Super Rapid naval gun
  • 1 × Phalanx Block 1B close-in weapon system (CIWS)
  • 2 × triple 324mm Eurotorp MU90 torpedo launchers

This armament mix allows the Formidable-class to execute a full range of naval missions, from area defence and anti-surface warfare to anti-submarine operations.

Each vessel supports aviation operations with a helicopter deck and hangar designed for a Sikorsky S-70B Seahawk. This capability significantly expands the ship’s surveillance range and allows for effective submarine hunting and maritime interdiction.

Powered by a Combined Diesel and Diesel (CODAD) propulsion system using four MTU engines, the frigates can reach speeds of up to 27 knots and operate over 4,000 nautical miles without needing resupply. This endurance enables extended deployments, a necessity for regional presence missions.

With a crew size of just 70 to 90 personnel, the frigates exemplify high-efficiency design. Advanced automation and integrated systems reduce manpower needs without compromising operational effectiveness or survivability in combat.

The integration of locally developed electronic systems—largely from DSTA and ST Electronics—underscores Singapore’s push for defence self-reliance and technical sovereignty. These local firms also support long-term maintenance and capability enhancements.

Recognizing the need to keep pace with evolving threats, the RSN launched a Mid-Life Upgrade (MLU) programme in 2023 for all six Formidable-class ships. The upgrades, being carried out by ST Engineering Marine with support from Naval Group, aim to extend the vessels’ operational lives well into the 2040s.

This upgrade phase is expected to include new combat systems, enhanced radar and sensor suites, propulsion improvements, and power management enhancements to accommodate future weaponry and autonomous systems. The MLU is a strategic investment in fleet longevity and technological parity amid growing regional naval competition.

The timing of the Aster missile test and the broader MLU programme is significant. Across the Indo-Pacific, naval capabilities are undergoing rapid transformation. China’s PLA Navy continues its blue-water expansion, Indonesia is bolstering its submarine fleet, and Australia is advancing high-tech assets under the AUKUS pact.

In this evolving landscape, Singapore’s Formidable-class frigates are not just defensive platforms; they are instruments of deterrence and cooperative security. Whether patrolling contested sea lanes, participating in multinational exercises, or providing humanitarian assistance, these ships are central to Singapore’s maritime strategy.
