Abu Dhabi

Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSO), a member of the Dubai Integrated Economic Zone Authority (DIEZ), and Derk Safety and Traffic Management, a leading developer of artificial intelligence (AI) analytics solutions for roadways, have launched 14 AI smart pedestrian crossing systems in the DSO. This achievement comes under their partnership, which aims to provide DSO with state-of-the-art capabilities and smart city solutions.

Derk’s “Real-Time Perception and Connectivity AI Platform” is specifically designed to detect pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable road users (VRUs) with exceptional accuracy and reliability. This pioneering system, the first of its kind in the region, integrates seamlessly with the road infrastructure to enhance safety measures.

Using a patented behaviour prediction model, the technology can actively activate flashing warning signs, in-road warning lights and even traffic signal controllers in anticipation of pedestrian crossings, preventing oncoming possible collisions with vehicles can be effectively prevented.

The system also collects valuable data to enhance road users’ awareness and response to concerned authorities towards safety issues and traffic performance. This achievement comes after extensive testing over two years, which was conducted to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the proof of concept.

Muammar Al Kathiri, Chief Officer of Engineering and Sustainability at DIEZ, said, “The implementation of Dirk’s AI Smart Pedestrian Crossing System at DSO directly aligns with the objectives outlined in the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan. By integrating this cutting-edge technology, we are creating an exceptional environment that prioritizes innovation, safety and sustainability.

“The system serves as a cornerstone in cementing DSO’s position as a technologically advanced region, providing residents and business partners with a seamless and intelligent living and working experience. Our long-term partnership with Derk Through this partnership, we will continue to make significant progress in ensuring pedestrian safety and furthering Dubai’s smart city agenda.”
Dr Georges Aude, CEO and Co-Founder of Dirk said, “Our collaboration with DIEZ aligns well with the vision of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, to provide Dubai with strong security To be established as a bicycle-friendly city. Measures and promotion of eco-friendly transport options.

“DIEZ has been instrumental in the successful implementation of our state-of-the-art AI Smart Pedestrian Crossing System at DSO. As we stand firm in our mission to advance the future of road safety and enable seamless and efficient movement of road users and autonomous people vehicles, this milestone is of vital importance. We look forward to sharing the positive impact of our efforts in Dubai and globally. The new system’s AI algorithms will be used to identify oncoming vehicles and other road users at pedestrian crosswalks. Designed to detect and track. This capability maximizes the system’s effectiveness over reaction time to surrounding vehicles.

The system’s control algorithms also provide the ability to activate or deactivate alerts and control their duration, allowing for customization based on specific crossing scenarios. The alert can be configured to remain active until a predetermined crossing time or as long as a pedestrian is detected in or around the crosswalk. This advanced functionality ensures optimum safety and efficient traffic management at pedestrian crossings.

Additionally, the system is equipped with ultra-high speed and low latency 5G connection, providing seamless connectivity. This advanced connectivity enables comprehensive data collection of security incidents and traffic data, while also facilitating remote operation, maintenance and configuration capabilities for the operator of the system. In the future, the system will be able to leverage 5G communication technologies to effectively transmit safety information and alerts to connected vehicles approaching pedestrian crosswalks.
