French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu is reportedly considering a Cabinet reshuffle once the 2026 state budget is definitively adopted, sources close to his office told franceinfo on Sunday.
“The prime minister is considering proposing a government adjustment to the president of the republic after the budget process, if it concludes successfully,” one source said, confirming earlier reporting by La Tribune.
Government spokesperson Maud Bregeon declined to comment directly on the reports when asked by broadcaster LCI, emphasizing that decisions on Cabinet changes fall under the authority of both the president and the prime minister.
“With the budget process drawing to a close, the government’s activities cannot be limited to managing day-to-day affairs,” Bregeon said, referring to the political debates ahead of the 2027 presidential election and “urgent daily issues that cannot wait.”
Several ministers have already signaled potential departures. Culture Minister Rachida Dati, who is running for mayor of Paris, announced she intends to leave the government before the municipal election campaign to focus on her bid. Sports Minister Marina Ferrari and Rural Affairs Minister Michel Fournier are also preparing campaigns in local elections in Aix-les-Bains and the Vosges region, respectively.
Health Minister Stephanie Rist may also face uncertainty after participating in a second round of a parliamentary by-election in the Loiret department on Sunday. She previously stated she would step down if she failed to win the seat.
France has endured months of political turbulence linked to the 2026 budget approval, which sparked motions of no confidence in parliament and heightened tensions within the governing coalition.
Lecornu, who assumed office last year, has consistently emphasized his priority is ensuring political stability while advancing key economic reforms, including the state budget package.
Any Cabinet changes would require the approval of French President Emmanuel Macron, whose administration has so far maintained a cautious approach amid mounting political pressure.
Observers say the reshuffle, if confirmed, could aim to strengthen Lecornu’s team ahead of the municipal elections and the broader political battles leading up to 2027.
