Iran-Europe nuclear talks positive direction

Tehran

Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdullahian has said that recent talks with European parties on reviving the 2015 nuclear deal have been “frank and constructive”. Amir-Abdullahian made the comments during a phone call on Tuesday with EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell on talks to save the nuclear deal, Xinhua news agency quoted the Iranian foreign ministry as saying. This nuclear agreement is formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

The importance of continued dialogue between Iran and Europe to achieve a common understanding and said that Borrell and EU Deputy Foreign Policy Chief Enrique Mora have played a “constructive” role in Gulf nuclear talks. He said that Luigi Di Maio, as the new EU Special Representative for the region, has “constructive” relations with Iran.

Speaking about possible solutions to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Amir-Abdullahian said that Iran has always supported global peace and stability and says that stopping the conflict is only possible through the political initiative.

Borrell, for his part, said the ongoing cooperation and dialogue between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency would be “fruitful and positive”. Iran signed the JCPOA with world powers in July 2015, agreeing to place some curbs on its nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of sanctions on the country. However, the US pulled out of the deal in May 2018 and re-imposed sanctions on Tehran.

Negotiations for the revival of the JCPOA began in April 2021 in Vienna, the capital of Austria. Despite several rounds of talks, there has been no significant breakthrough since the last round ended in August 2022. In June, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani held separate meetings with Mora as well as French, German and British representatives on the revival of the JCPOA.
